With the new Komuter Utara (north) trains now operating between Butterworth and Padang Besar, it has never been easier and cheaper to travel from Butterworth Penang to Sungai Petani by train (or vice versa).
There are now many Komuter trains a day that operate between Penang Railway Station in Butterworth to Sungai Petani in the state of Kedah.
Komuter Trains leave Butterworth for Sungai Petani at the following times every day :
05:25, 06:25, 07:35, 08:25, 09:25, 10:25, 12:25, 14:25, 16:25, 17:25, 18:25, 19:25, 20:25, 22:25.
The trip from Butterworth to Sungai Petani by train takes just 34 minutes.
The Komuter Train fare from Butterworth to Sungai Petani is just RM 3.60.
You could also catch one of the high-speed ETS Trains that travel between Butterworth and Padang Besar, but the fares are more expensive for this short trip
Fares for the ETS Trains to Sungai Petani will cost you RM 14 and take just a couple of minutes less, so you really should stick to using the Komuter Services on this route.
Please Note : from 1st February 2017, the Butterworth to Padang Besar ETS route will be cancelled.
So from this date you will have to use the Komuter Train service.
Sungai Petani Railway Station is located right in the centre of town, with plenty of accommodation options close by.
Komuter Trains from Sungai Petani to Butterworth Penang leave many times a day at, every one or two hours :
Again, you could catch the much more expensive high-speed ETS Trains travelling from Padang Besar to Butterworth.

The Butterworth Bus Terminal is also just outside the entrance to the station.
