There is one daily train from Singapore to Penang (the Ekspres Rakyat) that leaves Singapore's Woodlands railway station in the morning and takes approximately 12 and a half hours to reach Penang's railway station on the mainland at Butterworth.
From Butterworth train station it is just a short walk to the ferry terminal and the regular ferry over to George Town on Penang Island.

**Change of KTM Singapore Trains : From 1st July 2015 all Intercity Trains will no longer be departing from Woodlands Railway Station in Singapore and will now start from the nearby JB Sentral Station in Johor Bahru, just across the border in Malaysia.
Shuttle Train Service will now take passengers from Singapore to JB Sentral.
Tickets for this service from Singapore cost SGD 5.
