From March 2020, KTM have changed this route to include more trains travelling directly to Butterworth (Penang Sentral) with just a few services now terminating at Bukit Mertajam.
If you want to travel on to Butterworth for those trains that terminate at BM or travel to stations north (to the Thai border at Padang Besar), you have to change trains at Bukit Mertajam.
Usually, the timing between departures is just a few minutes, but at other times the wait can be quite a bit longer, so check the timetables carefully to make sure you can make the best connections.
Changing trains at Bukit Mertajam, you can take a cheap commuter train north to:
Tasek Gelugor, Sungai Petani, Gurun, Kobah, Alor Setar, Anak Bukit, Kodiang, Arau, Bukit Ketri and Padang Besar (the Malaysia / Thailand border train station).
