The train is the cheapest way to travel between Surat Thani and Hat Yai if you are prepared to take the slower ordinary trains and is far more interesting than travelling along the highway by bus or minibus.

Train Fares Hat Yai Surat Thani
Thai Railway fares can be rather complicated to work out due to all the
different fees you have to pay for type of train, air conditioning and
class of seat.
The basic fare from Hat Yai to Surat Thani is:
1st class 253 Baht.
2nd class 126 Baht.
3rd class 55 Baht.
For Rapid trains add another 50 Baht.
Special Express add another 170 Baht or 190 Baht for trains 31/32 and 37/38.
Add another 60 Baht for Air conditioned coaches.
So
if you are prepared to take an ordinary slow train in 3rd class you
could cover the 294 km distance from Hat Yai to Surat Thani train station for just 55 Baht.
But be warned, these ordinary trains tend to take most of the delays if there is any kind of problem, with the more expensive Special Express trains more likely to be on time.
