Kuala Lumpur Alor Setar Train

Most people Travel on the Kuala Lumpur Alor Setar Train to get from KL to Langkawi Island which can be reached from the port of Kuala Kedah 15 kilometres outside of the city.

The KTMB "Langkawi Express" train as it is commonly called (now renamed Ekspres Peninsular) is a daily overnight train that operates between JB Sentral, KL Sentral and Hat Yai Junction in the South of Thailand, stopping off in Alor Setar along the way.

For those just passing through the city to get to Langkawi, the ferry terminal for Langkawi is located 15 kilometres outside of the city at Kuala Kedah.

To get there cheaply there is a white coloured local bus that runs from the ferry to the bus station on the edge of the city travelling through the centre and near the train station on its route.

Just ask for directions to the nearest bus stop at the station.

Taxi's are also fairly cheap but you will have to negotiate a price.


Boats operate from 07:00 until 19:00 and leave every hour or so throughout the day.

You can book your tickets online or buy your tickets at the counter inside the terminal building.

It is advisable to book your Langkawi accommodation before you arrive on the island, especially during the high season.

Alor Setar offers visitors some interesting sights around the square (Padang) in the centre of the city and is often overlooked by tourists.

If you have a spare day or so, it is worth staying here for a while.

There is a good choice of accommodation in the city to suit all budgets and you can continue your journey by train or bus the next day.
