You can now catch the new KTMB ETS train from Ipoh to Penang Butterworth, with the high-speed Electric Train Services now the only trains operating between Ipoh station and Butterworth station.
Travel time from Ipoh to Penang is much faster than the now cancelled old Intercity trains on this route at just over one and a half hours on the fastest train.
All ETS Trains on this route are ETS Gold Services (unless specified) and depart every day.

Fares for the ETS Train Services vary depending on which service you use between Ipoh and Penang.
ETS Gold Service Trains cost : Adult : 33 RM - Children : 21 RM.
ETS Silver Service Trains cost : Adult : 23 RM - Children : 16 RM (no longer available on this route).
Platinum Service ETS trains cost : Adult : 42 RM - Children : 25 RM.
If you want to make an advance booking for any of these ETS Trains from Ipoh to Penang, you can book tickets up to 60 days in advance form any main KTMB Malaysian railway station.
You can also use the KTMB website to book online, but you will have to pay an additional admin fee of 2 RM or go through an online agent which is usually cheaper.
It is also just a couple of minutes walk away from Butterworth Ferry Terminal, where you can catch regular boats over to George Town on Penang island.
If you want to stay in Butterworth there are a few hotels 10 to 20 minutes walk away - or better take a taxi.
If you take the ferry over to George Town on Penang island, thee are hundreds of places to stay, with a good choice of budget backpacker hostels and guest houses, to luxury 5 star hotels and a great choice of old heritage hotels if you want to stay in a place with some old world charm.
Another option is to head out to the popular Batu Ferringhi Beach.
Just take bus 101 from the Jetty bus station (on your left when you leave the ferry terminal).
