The distance from Butterworth (Penang Sentral) to Sungai Petani by road is between 40 and 45 km depending on the route taken.
A quick, easy and the cheapest way to travel to Sungai Petani from Butterworth is to take a train from Butterworth Railway Station located just a short walk away from Penang Sentral Bus Terminal and the jetty for the ferry from Georgetown on Penang Island.
The duration of the journey by train to SP from Butterworth is just 34 minutes.

Once you arrive at Sungai Petani Railway Station you are just a short walk away from the centre of town.
Exit the station and turn right and you will see a footbridge over the railway tracks.
Once over the other side of the tracks you are 30 seconds walk away from the main road running through the centre of SP.
Sungai Petani has a wide range of accommodation if you are looking for somewhere to stay for a night or two, with plenty of budget hotels and mid-range hotels located a short walk from the train station.

Another cheap way to travel to SP from Butterworth is to take a Rapid Penang Intercity Bus number EB60 from Penang Sentral Bus Terminal to SP.
Buses depart every 30 to 45 minutes throughout the day.
The first Rapid Penang bus from Penang Sentral to Sungai Petani departs at 07:00.
The last bus departs at 22:00.
This bus ends up at the Terminal Bas Ekspres Ukir Square in Sungai Petani (5 minutes walk south of the KTM train station.
It also stops at the Sungai Petani old bus station on Jalan Petri which is the best place to get off if you want to stay in SP.

This is not the quickest way to travel as the Rapid pg bus stops to pick up passengers along the route.
The bus fare to SP is also a little bit more expensive than the train at RM 4.
Slightly faster than the Rapid Penang bus services, Cityliner also operate on the route from Penang Sentral to Sungai Petani.
