The KTM ETS Butterworth Alor Setar Train route offers the quickest way to travel between Penang and Alor Setar in the state of Kedah.
The trip by the new high-speed Electric Train Service takes around a hour.
Please note that you can also catch the much more regular KTM Komuter Trains between Butterworth and Alor Setar.
They are much more convenient with departures every one or two hours, plus they are cheaper than the ETS Trains.
With the new timetable from June 2018, there is again no longer any ETS trains operating on this route and all services between Butterworth and Alor Setar will be by KTM Komuter trains.
If you are travelling on to Langkawi island via the nearby port at Kuala Kedah, you can either take a taxi from the train station or you can walk for about ten minutes into the city centre, where you can catch a cheap local bus to the ferry terminal.
For the best places to stay on Langkawi, please see the following pages on our site :
From this date ETS services will no longer be operating between Alor Setar and Butterworth so you will have to use the KTM Komuter services.
The Train Station in Butterworth is located right next to the jetty where ferries leave for the short crossing over to George Town on Penang island.
Tickets for these Gold ETS Services cost:
Adult fare: 22 RM
Child fare: 15 RM
Advance booking is available (and advisable) for all ETS Trains in Malaysia.
Tickets for KTM Komuter services are only sold on the day of travel.
Advance purchase periods for ETS tickets varies greatly, so it is sometimes possible to buy tickets a couple of months in advance, while at other times of the year it may be possible to buy tickets just a few weeks in advance.
Tickets can be purchased from any KTMB station ticket counter or from the KTM Ticketing office in George Town on Penang island.
You can also easily book tickets online and print out your own tickets at home.
