If you want to take the train from Kuala Kangsar to Penang (Butterworth Railway Station), KTM Berhad operate the fast Electric Train Service (ETS for short) on this route.
These ETS trains are the only way to travel from Kuala Kangsar to Butterworth by train, as the cheap KTM Komuter Utara trains do not travel as far south as this (they terminate one stop north of here at Padang Rengas).
New ETS Timetable from Kuala Kangsar valid from 3rd June 2018.
EP 9102 (ETS Platinum) Departs Kuala Kangsar at 14:26 - Arrives at Butterworth at 15:40.
EP 9104 (ETS Platinum) Departs Kuala Kangsar at 17:41 - Arrives at Butterworth at 18:55.
EG 9322 (ETS Gold) Departs Kuala Kangsar at 20:48 - Arrives at Butterworth at 22:02.
EP 9106 (ETS Platinum) Departs Kuala Kangsar at 23:41 - Arrives at Butterworth at 00:55.
EG 9122 (ETS Gold) Departs Kuala Kangsar at 01:00 - Arrives at Butterworth at 02:15.
All ETS trains on this route from K. Kangsar to Butterworth depart daily.
Once you arrive at Butterworth Railway Station, you can then take a short walk to the ferry departure point and take one of the regular boats over to Penang Island (Please Note: Ferries do not operated 24 hours a day and the last boat over to Georgetown departs before some of the trains arrive - So we would advise you to take one of the earlier trains).
If you want to stay in Butterworth, there are a few places to stay, but you are much better off heading over to the island where there are a lot more choices of accommodation.
Tickets prices for these services depend on what type of train you choose:
The cheapest are the Gold ETS services, which cost:
Adult 25 RM - Child 17 RM
Tickets for slightly faster Platinum ETS services cost:
Adult 32 RM - Child 20 RM
Advance purchase of seats for these services is highly recommended.
You can buy ETS train tickets from the Kuala Kangsar Train Station ticket counter in advance (advance booking periods vary from a few weeks to a few months ahead), or any other KTM mainline railway station.
You can also book tickets online, either direct from the KTM website, or by using an online ticketing agent.
