Travelling by the new high-speed train (Electric Train Services - ETS) from Batu Gajah to Penang island (George Town) is a a fast and cost effective way to travel.
There are a number of both the cheaper Gold services and the more expensive Platinum services on this route between KL and Butterworth Railway Station on the mainland.
Once you arrive at Butterworth Station, it is just a short 15 minute ferry ride over the the island and the old heritage city of Georgetown.

EG 9120 (ETS Gold) Departs Batu Gajah at 10:34 - Arrives at Butterworth at 12:31.
EP 9102 (ETS Platinum) Departs Batu Gajah at 13:36 - Arrives at Butterworth at 15:33.
EP 9104 (ETS Platinum) Departs Batu Gajah at 15:55 - Arrives at Butterworth at 17:52.
EG 9322 (ETS Gold) Departs Batu Gajah at 20:05 - Arrives at Butterworth at 22:03.
EP 9106 (ETS Platinum) Departs Batu Gajah at 22:48 - Arrives at Butterworth at 00:45.
EG 9122 (ETS Gold) Departs Batu Gajah at 00:53 - Arrives at Butterworth at 02:50.
It is best to take the earlier trains as the ferry and buses over to the island stop running around midnight, so you would then have to take a much more expensive taxi over the bridge!
Train fares from Batu Gajah to Butterworth vary depending on the type of service you take.
ETS Platinum Trains cost:
44 RM for Adults - 26 RM for Children.
ETS Gold Trains cost:
34 RM for Adults - 21 RM for Children.
This KTM route is very popular so you should always make an advance booking or seats.

Once you arrive at the jetty in George Town, there are a number of hotels near by the jetty, or you can take a walk, free bus or taxi into the main part of the city where there are dozens of places to stay ranging from cheap backpacker hostels to top luxury 5 Star accommodation.
