If you want to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Setar as quickly as possible, the KTM ETS Train from KL Sentral to Alor Setar in Kedah is now the fastest way to go overland.
These new fast trains can travel at speeds of 140 Kilometres an hour, much quicker than a bus and taking half the time of the old diesel Intercity services that used to operate on this route.
Trains leave from the main station in Kuala Lumpur, KL Sentral, but you can also catch these services from the old station (Terminal KTM), departing just five minutes later than the times shown below.

EP 9274 (ETS Platinum Service): Departs KL Sentral at 08:30 - Arrives at Alor Setar at 13:35. (This new ETS2 train includes a Business Class carriage).
EP 9202 (ETS Platinum Service): Departs KL Sentral at 09:55 - Arrives at Alor Setar at 14:49.
EG 9420 (ETS Gold Service): Departs KL Sentral at 10:28 - Arrives at Alor Setar at 15:36.
EP 9204 (ETS Platinum Service): Departs KL Sentral at 18:34 - Arrives at Alor Setar at 23:31.
EG 9224 (ETS Gold Service): Departs KL Sentral at 22:50 - Arrives at Alor Setar at 03:55.

Please note: There are no 1st or 2nd class carriages - all the coaches are the same class except for the newer ETS2 trains that operate with one Business Class carriage.

If you are using this train to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi, you will have to take a taxi to the jetty from the station, or walk into the city centre and catch a cheap bus to the jetty.
