Taking the fast ETS Train from KL Sentral to Arau (keretapi laju) in the state of Perlis is a good and fast way to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi, as the railway station in Arau is the nearest station to the ferry jetty at Kuala Perlis, where you can catch regular boats over to the island.
New KL to Arau ETS Timetable (jadual) for 2020:
All the following ETS services depart daily. If
you wish to depart from the old Kuala Lumpur Railway Station rather than
KL Sentral, trains leave about 4 - 5 minutes later than the time shown below:
EG 9222 (ETS Gold Service): Departs Kuala Lumpur Sentral at 07:12 - Arrives at Arau at 12:42.
EP 9274 (ETS Platinum Service): Departs KL Sentral at 08:30 - Arrives at Arau at 13:59 (This new ETS2 train includes a Business Class carriage).
EP 9202 (ETS Platinum Service): Departs KL Sentral Station at 09:55 - Arrives at Arau at 15:10.
EG 9420 (ETS Gold Service): Departs KL Sentral Station at 10:28 - Arrives at Arau at 15:59.

The older ETS trains only have one class - there are no 1st, 2nd or 3rd class seats.
However, newer ETS2 trains are now being introduced and they operate with a new Business Class carriage.
Fares (tambang) vary on the type of train you use.
The basic fares are:
ETS Gold Trains cost: Adult 73 RM - Child 41 RM
ETS Platinum Trains cost: Adult 98 RM - Child 53 RM
With KTM's Flexi Fares, these prices shown will vary depending on a number of factors.
The main ones are:
How far in advance you book your tickets (tickets booked over 30 days in advance will get a small discount, while tickets bought 6 days or less in advance will cost a little more).
ETS tickets will also now be more expensive during Malaysian holiday periods.
The only way to get an actual price for any particular train is to now go through the online booking process.
Train tickets are normally available to purchase a couple of months in advance, but booking periods do vary quite considerably throughout the year
You can buy tickets by visiting any KTMB Railway Station in Peninsular Malaysia or more easily and to save a trip to the station:
If you are travelling from KL to Langkawi by train, you will have to get from Arau KTM train station to Kuala Perlis Jetty.
You can take a taxi to the ferry terminal at Kuala Perlis (jeti) from Arau station.
A taxi to the jetty will cost you around 26 to 30 RM.
You could also take a bus from Arau train station to Kangar Bus Terminal (Bukit Lagi), then another bus from Kangar to the Kuala Perlis Bus Terminal.
The bus will take you much longer, but if you are on a budget it is the cheapest way to get to the jetty.
