The KTM ETS train from Ipoh to Penang Sentral in Butterworth departs six times a day and takes around one hour and 40 minutes to travel the 140 km distance, with tickets costing between 33 RM for a Gold service to 42 RM for a Platinum.
Please note: From September 2023 you can now take a much cheaper KTM Komuter train from Ipoh to Penang (Butterworth).
Travel time from Ipoh to Penang is much faster than the now-cancelled old Intercity trains that used to run on this route and making travel by train now the quickest way to get from Ipoh to Penang overland.

If you want to make an advance booking for any of these ETS Trains from Ipoh to Penang, you can book tickets up to a few months in advance from any main KTMB Malaysian railway station (advance booking periods do vary and sometimes tickets can only be purchased just a few weeks in advance, especially when KTM are planning one of their regular timetable changes).
You can also use the KTMB website to book online, but it is not the most simple of booking processes, so it is often easier to go through an online agent.

Tiba di Stesen Keretapi Butterworth
Butterworth Railway Station is ideally located next to Butterworth Bus Terminal if you want to continue your journey by bus.
It is also just a couple of minutes walk away from Butterworth Ferry Terminal, where you can catch regular boats over to George Town on Penang island.
If you want to stay in Butterworth there are a few hotels 10 to 20 minutes walk away - or better take a taxi.
If you take the ferry over to George Town on Penang island, there are hundreds of places to stay, with a good choice of budget backpacker hostels and guest houses, to luxury 5 star hotels and a great choice of old heritage hotels if you want to stay in a place with some old world charm.
Another option is to head out to the popular Batu Ferringhi Beach.
Just take bus 101 from the Jetty bus station (on your left when you leave the ferry terminal).
