Taking the KTM Komuter train to/from Arau is a really cheap and convenient way get around the Malaysian states of Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak, with regular services on the Komuter Utara Lines (Northern Commuter Lines).

There are two Komuter routes in this part of Malaysia, with all services connecting at Bukit Mertajam station:
1) The Butterworth to Padang Besar route.

Booking Arau Komuter Train Tickets
It is not possible to make an advance booking for any commuter train.
Tickets are only sold on the day of travel, so just turn up at the station, buy a Komuter ticket, then take the next Komuter train.
Seating is on a first come first served basis just like on a tube / subway train.
If you want to travel with a reserved seat, you will have to take one of the more expensive Electric Train Services (ETS for short).
