Travel by KTM Komuter train to/from Gurun is a quick and cheap way to get around this part of Malaysia, with regular services on the Northern Komuter Line (Komuter Utara) to Padang Besar on the Thailand border, and Butterworth in Penang.

You can also travel by cheap commuter train further south into the state of Perak (as far as Ipoh).

This route connects to the Butterworth - Padang Besar route at Bukit Mertajam.

All you do is just turn up at the station, buy your Komuter train ticket, then take the next available departure.

These trains are like tube/subway trains, with seating down the edges and standing room in the centre.

At busy times of day, it may be standing room only as this section of the line is often very busy.
