The new Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) ETS Butterworth to KL Sentral train service started operating in July 2015 and is now the fastest way to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Penang.
A total of 10 services a day are planned, but to start with, there will be just a few ETS trains a day on this route between Kuala Lumpur's KL Sentral Railway Station and Padang Besar Railway Station on the Malaysia - Thailand border.
Update 19th May 2016 :
With a new KTMB timetable from this date, all the older Intercity Express trains to/from Butterworth have now been cancelled, with all long distance trains from Butterworth now operated by the new electric train services (ETS).
ETS routes so far are from KL to Padang Besar, Ipoh to Padang Besar and KL to Butterworth, Gemas to Padang Besar and Gemas to Butterworth.

From 10th October 2015, there is a new Electric Train Service starting from Butterworth to Gemas in the state of Negeri Sembilan.

This new high-speed train service will run on the new double electrified tracks and will travel at speeds of up to 160 kms an hour.
This has reduced the travel time between Kuala Lumpur and Butterworth Penang to around just 3 -4 hours.
From Kl Sentral to Padang Besar, the trip time is planned at around four hours and 15 minutes, once the real high-speed trains arrive.
