There are new KTM Komuter Butterworth to Kamunting Shuttle Train Services (now extended to Padang Rengas) and from 1st January 2016, a new Butterworth to Padang Besar commuter train, serving the northern part of Peninsular Malaysia.
These new Komuter Trains from Butterworth (Komuter Utara) will compliment the new high-speed ETS Trains that have started operations between KL Sentral and Padang Besar from July 2015, stopping at some of the smaller stations not used by the ETS Services.
From 1st January 2016, there is a new KTM Butterworth Komuter Train service to and from Padang Besar, stopping at all stations.
Stations from south to north are :
Bukit Tengah, Bukit Mertajam, Tasik Gelugor, Sungai Petani, Gurun, Kobah, Alor Setar, Anak Bukit, Kodiang, Arau, Bukit Ketri and Padang Besar.

Fares start at just 1 RM to 11.40 RM for the whole journey between Butterworth and Padang Besar.

There are also connecting Komuter Train Services to the south (Perak state), connecting at the interchange station at Bukit Mertajam.
These new Komuter Trains link Butterworth in Penang state, to the state of Perak.
The new Komuter Trains will stop at Bukit Tengah, Bukit Mertajam, Simpang Ampat, Nibong Tebal, Parit Buntar, Bagan Serai, Taiping and Padang Rengas.
Please Note : from September 2016 this service will only be departing from Bukit Mertajam (apart from a few trains) and the service has now been extended to Padang Rengas.
If travelling from Butterworth, you will now firstly have to take a Komuter train to Bukit Mertajam, then connect to trains from there (apart from a couple of direct services a day).
Travel by KTM Komuter train is the cheapest way to travel around this area in north-west Peninsular Malaysia.
